Airlink Flight Review: Kasane (BBK) to Johannesburg (JNB)

After an unforgettable safari experience in Chobe National Park, I boarded Airlink Flight 4Z 307 from Kasane, Botswana, to Johannesburg, South Africa. This regional route is serviced seven times a week and provides a convenient connection for travelers exploring northern Botswana and heading to South Africa’s financial hub.

Kasane International Airport (BBK) is located just 4 kilometers south of town along the A33 road and is a quick 10-minute transfer from my hotel, Chobe Bush Lodge. The airport primarily serves Airlink, Air Botswana, and several charter flight operators offering access to the Okavango Delta and surrounding safari lodges.

At check-in, Airlink offered dedicated counters for both economy and business class passengers (when available), though this particular flight was operated in an all-economy configuration. The check-in process was swift and well-organized, with friendly staff assisting passengers and minimizing wait times.

Airlink recommends downloading your digital boarding pass in advance, though printed passes are still issued at the counter. Self-scanning boarding pass kiosks are used prior to departure. After check-in, we proceeded through customs and security with minimal delays, ready for the short flight into Johannesburg.

Travel Tips for Flying Airlink from Kasane

  • Book early: Flights between Kasane and Johannesburg are limited and can sell out, especially in peak safari season (June–October).

  • Download your boarding pass: Save time at check-in by using Airlink’s mobile check-in and scanning your boarding pass at the gate.

  • Travel light: The Embraer ERJ-140 has limited cabin storage. Use soft-sided bags or check larger items.

  • Window seat alert: For fantastic aerial views over the Chobe River and northern Botswana, request a window seat on the right side (starboard) of the aircraft.

  • Connect with ease: Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport offers seamless domestic and international transfers — just allow at least 90 minutes if connecting.

Kasane Airport Facilities & Boarding Experience

Kasane International Airport (BBK) is compact but efficient, offering basic amenities for departing passengers. While there is no dedicated Airlink lounge at this airport, the waiting area is clean and offers comfortable seating, air conditioning, and large windows that overlook the airstrip — a nice bonus for aviation enthusiasts or wildlife spotters.

Boarding was done directly from the terminal via a short walk to the aircraft. The process was orderly and well-managed by ground staff. There were no delays, and boarding announcements were made clearly in both English and Setswana.

Relax at Nthula Lounge – Kasane Airport

If you’re departing from Kasane International Airport (BBK), don’t miss the opportunity to unwind at the Nthula Lounge, just beyond security. This modest but comfortable lounge offers:

  • Air-conditioned comfort away from the main terminal

  • Complimentary tea, coffee, and light snacks

  • A small selection of reading material

  • Charging ports for devices

  • Clean restrooms and a calm space to refresh before your flight

Access is available to select passengers flying Airlink, Air Botswana, or charter carriers, and is often included with business class or priority tickets. You can also purchase single-entry access for a modest fee at the door.

Aircraft & Seating: Embraer ERJ-140

The flight was operated on an Embraer ERJ-140, a 44-seater regional jet known for its reliability and quiet performance. The 2-1 seating configuration offers a surprisingly spacious feel, especially when compared to other regional aircraft. If you’re traveling solo, the single seats on the left side of the cabin offer added privacy.

Legroom was adequate for a short-haul flight, with a seat pitch of approximately 31 inches, making it comfortable for most travelers. Overhead storage is limited, so it’s advisable to check larger bags.

In-Flight Experience & Service

Once onboard, passengers are greeted by polite and professional Airlink cabin crew members. A complimentary light snack and beverage service was provided shortly after takeoff. Options included bottled water, juice, or soft drinks, along with a packaged snack — simple but appreciated for a flight under two hours.

Cabin cleanliness was excellent, and the crew maintained a friendly and efficient atmosphere throughout the journey. The captain provided updates on flight time, weather, and arrival information, which added a personal touch to the experience.

Arrival in Johannesburg (JNB)

Upon arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport, disembarkation was quick and smooth, thanks to the small number of passengers. Luggage arrived slightly late at the carousel, and the connection to onward domestic or international flights was easy to manage thanks to the airport’s clear signage and transit layout.

Final Thoughts: Is Airlink Worth It?

For travelers heading from Kasane to Johannesburg, Airlink offers a reliable, comfortable, and efficient regional flight experience. While the flight may be short, the airline’s attention to detail, on-time performance, and professional service make it stand out among Southern Africa’s regional carriers.

If you’re planning a safari in Chobe National Park or the Okavango Delta, this flight is an ideal link to major South African cities — and a great alternative to long road transfers or overnight layovers.
